A Taste of Old Irvine
by John B McMillan
Irvine’s past is enriched with events about which few people are familiar. From the history behind the street names to dramatic shipwrecks and rescues, the impact of war, stories from the harbour and shipyard, overcrowded and deplorable housing conditions, and even a swinging religious cult that practised the ‘most scandalous acts’ that was hounded out of the town in 1784, this book offers a smorgasbord of historical tales and exposes some popular myths, masquerading as history, that have no basis in fact.
